Nanfanao Harbor is one of the three major fishing ports in Taiwan, as well as an important base for the deep-sea fishery in eastern Taiwan. Nanfanao harbor and the island opposite of it are tied together by sandbars into a natural barrier. Whenever the southwest winds rise in the hot summer, vessels would get in the harbor to dodge from the strong winds. Additionally, Nanfanao is also known as the hometown of mackerel for its abundance of mackerel in the nearby sea.
